Following the successful rejuvenation of the Weltmuseum Wien, Hoskins Architects was commissioned by the Kunsthistorisches Museum to oversee the creation of exhibition space for the new House of Austrian History (Haus der Geschichte Österreich – hdgö) in the neighbouring Garden Wing of the Neue Burg. The museum, which is the first museum in Austria to focus on contemporary history, opened to the public in November 2018 to celebrate 100 years of the Austrian Republic.
Through carefully considered interventions in the historic building fabric, a series of rooms located on the mezzanine floor have been transformed into a new 1,400 m2 gallery space. Renovated historic windows, doors and ornate plasterwork, new parquet flooring and modernised building infrastructure work to create a high-quality museum environment. New visitor facilities including a lift to provide barrier-free access, accessible toilet provision and internal and external staircases have been carefully integrated, enabling the sustainable adaption of the Neue Burg.
