Planning for The Scottish National Gallery has been approved

We are delighted that Celebrating Scotland’s Art – The Scottish National Gallery Project , which will see the transformation of the Scottish National Gallery, has been given planning approval.

Our work with The National Galleries of Scotland started in 2014, and since then we have been working on a scheme that will radically improve access to the Gallery’s world-class collection of Scottish art. The scheme will triple the exhibition space, and vastly improve visitor access and circulation through the gallery complex. The setting and entrance to the Gallery from East Princes St Gardens will also be greatly improved, with the aim to enhance its connection with the outside public space.

The £16.8 million project officially starts on-site in spring 2017 and will continue until autumn 2018, with the new gallery space opening to the public early in 2019.

Our event for Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival 2016

As this is the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, for Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival 2016, we will be welcoming visitors to our studio to show where and how we work.

Known for award-winning projects such as the National Museum of Scotland, Mareel Cinema & Music Venue, and Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, we use models as part of the design process to develop and explain our ideas.

For this event we will be exhibiting our extensive model collection, and giving visitors the chance to learn more about the practice and our projects from members of our team. Visitors will also have the opportunity to make their own model building from Plasticine, which will become part of a large model city that is constructed over the course of the day. Our aim is to use this process to explain concepts / themes about cities, and the role that designers can play in improving the fabric of everyday life.

The model-making activity is suitable for all ages, skills and abilities. To participate please drop-in anytime between 10am and 4pm. All materials will be provided. Children are required to be accompanied by an adult.

Original fabric revealed at The Registers

The Registers project in Edinburgh is currently on-site. Existing works, including interior strip-out and demolition, have revealed some interesting features of the building’s history that have been captured by our team during their recent site visit.

Eastwood Health & Care Centre opens to the public

Opening to the public today (8 August 2016), Eastwood Health and Care Centre is a reference design development with contractor Morgan Sindall. Successfully delivered within budget, the project provides a benchmark for “excellent, sustainable and good value design”, achieved through the hub procurement process, serving as a model for future primary healthcare centres.

The facility has been delivered by hub West Scotland in partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and East Renfrewshire Council, and will be occupied by the East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), along with five GP Practices.

Director Clare Kemsley is “delighted to have completed the Reference Project, which was designed from the outset to accommodate future flexibility, and an innovative layout and construction approach.” Adding that “the feedback received to date has been overwhelmingly positive. We hope the building will become a valued asset within the wider community, and make a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of the local service users and staff.”

The project has since been shortlisted for the Brick Awards ‘Best Public Building’, with the cerermony held in London 10 November.

National Theatre of Scotland HQ construction progresses

Entitled Rockvilla, this new facility is sited on the banks of the Forth & Clyde Canal, within Glasgow’s burgeoning cultural quarter. As the new engine room for The National Theatre of Scotland, it will encourage people to engage with previously avoided sections of the canal, and contribute to the continued regeneration of the Speirs Wharf area.

Rockvilla will be a dedicated facility to assist the theatre company in their ever more ambitious national and international productions. It will have a fully operational technical and costume production resource, as well as providing spaces for small-scale community drama work. It will also include one of the largest theatrical rehearsal rooms in Scotland.

The building will not be a venue for public performances, as the National Theatre of Scotland continues to say true to its innovative ‘Theatre Without Walls’ model of operation.
